Hullo, livejournal. I don't imagine anyone will stumble across this anytime soon, but I thought I should offer some sort of explanation:

This is strictly a fandom journal, so you will most likely find nothing but memes, picspams and the occasional fanfic here. But mostly memes. I'm still trying to work out where I stand in regards to fanfiction (which I can write, but which I'm wary of real-life friends finding), so that part may take some time.

Eventually, once I inevitably cave in to my desire to write fic, this journal will become friends-locked. By then, I hope there are people who would actually be interested in being lj-friends with me. :)

LOL So guess who caved and wrote fanfic already? Fluffy-slashy fanfic, at that. For a (sadly) relatively obscure fandom, but still.

I imagine it's only a matter of time before real-life friends stumble across my journal. I have a message for certain of these friends: I would very much appreciate not being judged, KAY THANKS. :D

Pff, who needs a life?

I'm printing the Gutenberg version of "Mike and Psmith" out. Until I can get my hands on an actual copy, I've got to have some way of scanning through it without getting online, where the distractions are many and shiny. I haven't read it all the way through in quite some time.

And since I fail at working the printer(although I am quite proud of myself for managing to change the black ink cartridge with minimal swearing and no horrible stains), there's a great whack of white space off to the side of the words on each page. I was upset about wasting paper at first, but then I realized -

It's exactly the right amount of space for making quick little notes. And somewhat naughty stick-figure illustrations.>:)

I don't know if anything fandom-relevant will actually come of this, but I'm sitting here waiting for 127 pages to print. I wanted to write a journal entry. :P

Reading Plans and Psmithery

I've been worried for a while now about the fact that I don't seem to enjoy reading as much as I once did. It didn't strike me until earlier today that this was simply because I haven't had time lately to actually enjoy it. First thing this summer, before my mother manages to ship me off to some sort of camp that she insists will look good on a college resume, I'm going to sit down and read through the Sherlock Holmes canon. I'm almost ashamed to call myself a fan, having read only about half of the stories themselves, and most of them long enough ago that I've forgotten them. If I've got any energy/brain power left after that, I'll set about tracking down some more of Wodehouse's stuff. I almost wish I'd found his one-off works before the Jeeves and Psmith novels. I'm in love with the man's writing style, but I'm also in love with the characters. I'm afraid of losing interest without Bertie or Psmith there for the fangirl portion of my brain to focus on. (I am regularly ashamed of this part of my brain when it comes to this sort of thing.)

But now: The somewhat fandom-relevant part of this entry! I fear I'm already making myself into something of a one-trick pony with my recent Psmithery, but I managed to read through the first few chapters of Mike and Psmith earlier today. These are my findings.

1. Good grief, it really has been ages since I read this. I don't remember any of this stuff.

2. Anyone who wants to read this book should take some time to research cricket on wikipedia, if nothing else. Augh.

3. Psmith... can be a bit of dick, actually. Seriously. I was almost on Spiller's side with the whole "study" issue at first, but that might have mostly just been because it's distressingly easy to see the same thing happening to me...

4. Tip: If you want to get away with reading a book in class, print out the online version and read the pages from a three-ring binder. It looks like you're glancing over notes. :D

5. Psmith is definitely flirting with Mike. Mike seems to be oblivious.

Some choice excerpts:
"We must stick together. We are
companions in misfortune. Lost lambs. Sheep that have gone astray.
Divided, we fall, together we may worry through." And thus was forged a terrifying alliance.
"You and I, hand in hand, will
search the countryside for ruined abbeys."
There he goes with the hand-in-hand stuff already...
There are moments when one wants to be alone. It is imperative that we have a place to retire to after a fatiguing day.
Maybe it's just my immature, twenty-first century mind, but I can't not read that as some sort of proposition.
'Psmith, in the matter of decorating a study and preparing tea in it, was
rather a critic than an executant. He was full of ideas, but he
preferred to allow Mike to carry them out. It was he who suggested that
the wooden bar which ran across the window was unnecessary, but it was
Mike who wrenched it from its place. Similarly, it was Mike who
abstracted the key from the door of the next study, though the idea
was Psmith's.' I know this one's just me being immature, but I can't help thinking that Psmith just wants to watch Mike do this stuff. XD

There's one other line that struck me. I haven't actually gotten to the part in the book yet, but I noticed it and read
a bit of the context as I was putting all the pages in order:

"Your stories are never too long for me," said Psmith. "Say on!"
It goes on to say that he 'listens attentively' to Mike's story. Awwwwwwww. Psmith doesn't let just anyone get a word in edgewise, you know.

Um... what? Have I missed something? I was asleep for ten hours; what the hell's been going on?!

Psmith, Journalist

I'm one of those weird people who will seriously download an entire audiobook just to hear ONE LINE read aloud.

I just downloaded "Psmith, Journalist," to hear the narrator say, "It was not Psmith's habit, when he felt deeply on any subject, to exhibit his feelings; and this matter of the tenements had hit him harder than any one who did not know him intimately would have imagined. Mike would have understood him, but Billy Windsor was too recent an acquaintance."

I thought I'd feel terrible and pathetic afterward, but, um, no. It was totally worth it. Which kind of scares me.

So, question: Does anyone think the subtext between Psmith and Mike was actually on purpose? Because if my fanficcery is going to have Wodehouse spinning in his grave, I think I should go apologize to him now. And if not, YAY. :D

Apologies for the strange sentence structures. I was just over at sherlock_lulz and I'm having trouble forming sentences without swear words. :P

Well, thanks, I've got like 16 minutes of battery power left on this laptop and now I have to go find my cord so I can watch Spoony's FFVIII finale and listen to the not-actually-quite-that-bad-but-good-GRIEF-get-it-out-of-my-head "Eyes on Me" song. :P

AUGH + Meme

Can someone PLEASE explain to my brain that I don't have time to write more Psmith-fic?! Especially Psmith/Eve fic?! That would require rereading Leave it to Psmith, which I really, really, don't have time for. Augh. My brain hates me. ): Expect new fic within the week XD

On a related note, here's a meme I did a while back. I don't know why I didn't post it sooner...

Choose ten fictional characters and answer the following questions.

1. Bertie Wooster
2. Psmith
3. Mike Jackson
4. Ford Prefect
5. Reginald Jeeves
6. Arthur Dent
7. Sherlock Holmes
8. Inspector G. Lestrade
9. Zaphod Beeblebrox
10. John H. Watson

1. Divide the list up by even and odd. Which group of five would make a better Five Man Band (like a Power Rangers team)? Who would you slot in each position: Leader, Lancer (second-in-command), Big Guy, Smart Guy, The Chick? If you think the team would be improved by swapping one character between the even and odd groups, which ones would you switch?

(O HAI, tvtropes! XD There goes my free-time.)

Team 1 - Bertie, Mike, Jeeves, Holmes, Zaphod.
Team 2 - Psmith, Ford, Arthur, Lestrade, Watson.

Well, Team 1 has Jeeves and Holmes, so I think they win. Zaphod would automatically assume himself to be the leader, Mike is used to playing second-in-command (as it were) to Psmith, so he would probably take that role, Jeeves and Holmes could play chess for the role of Smart Guy, and... Oh dear. Poor Bertie. He's either the Big Guy or the Chick. Hm.

2. Gender-swap 2, 8 & 10. Which character would have the most change in their story arc? Which the least? Would any of these characters have to have a complete personality change to be believable as the opposite sex?

*sporfle* Well... If Psmith was a woman, I could at least tell my friends that I ship him/her and Mike. XD I'm not sure if his personality would change much or not, but as far as storyline goes, I'm guessing he/she would have still been single at the end of "Leave it to Psmith."

Lestrade probably wouldn't be on the policeforce, which means he/she probably wouldn't even be in the Holmes stores. D:

As for Watson, some Holmesian scholars would be punching the air and shouting "We told you!" (Incidentally, I'm not among them.)

3. Compare the matchups of 1 & 8 and 5 & 9. (Ignore canon sexual preferences for the moment.) Which couple would be more compatible? Which couple would be more plausible to people from either principle's home culture?

Um. Yeah, neither would be what you'd call 'plausible,' but Jeeves and Zaphod would certainly be more epic...

4. Your team is 3, 4 & 9. The mission consists of a social challenge, a mental challenge and a physical challenge. Which team member do you assign to each challenge?

Social - Zaphod
Physical - Mike
Mental - Ford

5. 7 becomes 1's boss for a week in some plausible fashion. How's their working relationship?

Not good. Holmes would go insane if he was alone with Bertie for five minutes, I'm sure.

6. 2 finds him/her/itself inserted into 6's continuity. As far as anyone other than 2 or 6 is concerned, they've always been there. What role would 2 be presumed to have had in 6's story, and could they fit in without going wonky?

"Wh -? Oh, um, yes - many times have Comrade, er, Dent and I shared a drink or two at the pub, and he always appeared to me to be a reasonably honorable man, but I rather think he must have slipped some undesirable substance into my glass the last time we partook in making merry... Oh! In my confusion, I forgot to mention - I'm sure I'm dreaming, but I dislike the unhappiness of others even in fantasy - there's a metal chap standing in the hallway complaining about something he calls diodes - ought'nt someone go and see what the trouble is?"

(The phrase "without going wonky" does not exist within any story involving Wodehouse characters, BTW. And I know I can't write Psmith's dialogue for crap. I imagine he's a bit out of it, though, what with suddenly finding himself in space and all.)

7. 3 and 5 get three wishes. The catch is that they have to agree on all three wishes before they get the benefits of any of them. What three wishes would they make?

I imagine they'd each give the other a wish to make for himself, and then agree on the last one, so -

1. Bertie's tailor finds he is no longer able to work, and Jeeves helps him locate a more suitable one.
2. Psmith becomes bullet-proof (I don't think Mike was very happy with him ticking gangsters off and getting shot at in Psmith, Journalist. And he's smart enough to know it will probably happen again.)
3. Girls leave Bertie and Psmith alone.

(I love Eve, BTW. It's all in good fun.)

8. 1 and 2 are brainwashed by a one-time artifact that works even on people immune to mind control to attack and kill 4. They keep their normal personality, skills and competence level, except any Code vs. Killing has been turned off. Can 4 survive? How?

Seeing as Ford can, you know, travel in outer-space, I'd say he has a pretty good chance.

9. 6, 7, 9 & 10 must help an orphanage full of small and depressed children have a merry Christmas. Who does what, knowing that at the very least the kids will be expecting a visit from Santa?

Zaphod tells the kids stories of his epic travels and adventures.

Holmes teaches them chess and plays the violin.

Arthur makes tea and snacks.

Watson is kind-hearted enough to put on a false beard and padded coat, although the kids are somewhat concerned by the fact that Santa seems to be limping. Holmes berates him later for carrying the gigantic sack of presents, what with his wounded shoulder and all.

10. 3 and 8 are challenged to circumnavigate the Earth in eighty days or less, using only forms of transportation invented before 1900. Can they do it, or will they be fatally distracted by sidequests or their own personality conflicts?

I hate to do Mike an injustice, but I'm not sure how he would fare on that sort of adventure without Psmith to take the lead. As for the transportation, the two of them even being together on that sort of journey probably required some time travel. And the TARDIS was invented before 1900. On some planets. ;)

Write a ficof fifteen words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step one.

Same character list.

        prompts ►

        o1. AU - 5 & 9
Zaphod blinked at the Englishmen - one looking terrified, the other mildly interested. "Zarking improbability drive..."
        o2. Dark - 3 & 4
Space was dark. Really dark. Mike clawed blindly at nothing, gasping for air that wasn't there. He felt a hand close around his wrist, and then he was being pulled into the ship.
        o3. Threesome - 1, 5, & 7
Bertie always felt a bit left out when they started discussing anything more complex than music.
        o4. Amnesia - 2 & 10
Psmith knew something was wrong. For one thing, he could remember nothing of the last few days. For another, he was certain that Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson could not possibly be discussing a case next to his hospital bed. ("That friend of yours is really something, Mr. Smith," a nurse remarked later. "Came in and read out loud to you for hours yesterday.")
        o5. Hurt/Comfort - 6 & 8
"Come on, sir, out of the road. Looks like you've taken quite a hit on the head; I'm sure getting trampled by horses won't help matters. What? Well, yes, I'm sure we can find some tea at the station."
        o6. Crackfic - 4 & 9
You know, anything I can think of strikes me as being at least a little plausible in the H2G2 universe. Sorry.
        o7. Genderswap - 2 & 6
"This is a regular occurance, then?"
"Well, not this exactly. The improbability drive plays havoc with everything, not just gender."
        "But it is temporary?"
        "Oh, yes, quite."
        o8. First Time - 2 & 7
The first time Smith (he had not yet added the silent 'P' to the beginning) had an inkling that he was somewhat unusual was when he found that he knew the explanation before reading the end of the story.
        o9. Angst - 3 & 8
The Yard had been mostly quiet all day. This quiet was shattered by a young man bursting through the door, holding a monocle'd and rather limp companion in his arms, screaming for help and trying to stem the flow of blood from the other's side.
(Once again, just assume time travel was involved.)
        o1o. Babyfic - 1
His eyes never seemed to grow older with the rest of him. They remained babyishly wide and bright and perfectly blue throughout his life.

Star Trek: The Original Series - fic and spoilers

Confession 1: I am a Trekkie.

Confession 2: I ship Kirk/Spock. The whole "T'hy'la" thing, in my opinion, sort of renders any arguments to the contrary moot.

Confession 3: Bones is my favorite. XD

Confession 4: I fangirl the Bones and Spock Vitriolic Best Buds relationship far more than the K/S romantic one.

So I wrote some fic. Some of it's old and some of it's new, and none of it's long.

The first fic is from "City on the Edge of Forever."

Here we go! :D

-------

He stepped outside, froze, shouted, and suddenly had his arms full of Jim, and – what the hell, was Spock trying to hug him?

Then the captain was grinning at him, and the vulcan was shaking his hand and blushing green, and then didn't that truck-driver see her–?

-------

The next one is from The Empath.

-------

Spock's hand was on the side of his face, and McCoy wanted to shout at him to break the contact - his mind wasn't anything a touch telepath wanted to get mixed up in just then. But he couldn't find the energy to raise his voice.

He realized that Spock was relaying a sense of calm through the touch.

"You've got a good bedside manner, Spock."

But there was something else under the quiet serenity.

Before slipping into unconsciousness, McCoy recognized worry, fear, and grief - and knew that Spock should have been more than capable of concealing them from him.

"You were letting me win."

Spock looked up. "Has it ever occurred to you that the ship's surgeon should spend more time in sickbay than on the bridge, Doctor?"

"Don't change the subject. You were letting me win. Before I died. You were letting me know I was right."

"I'm sure I don't know what you mean."

McCoy crossed his arms. "Pointy-eared bastard. I suppose a thank-you would only get me a raised eyebrow."

"I have work to attend to, Doctor McCoy."

-------

I stole one of the prompt sets from 1sentence  ... SHHH.

1. Motion
New recruits tended to stumble a bit upon beaming down to a planet for the first time - most people didn't notice the motion of the ship until it was suddenly absent.

2. Cool
The temperature control was broken, and McCoy couldn't stifle his laughter at the sight of Spock in a turtleneck.

3. Young
"I'm too old for this," Bones muttered, ducking behind a wall to avoid the shots.

4. Last
The seal should have held for eight hours - Scotty turned it into twelve.

5. Wrong
When McCoy finally told Spock about the forced mind-meld that had taken place in the alternate universe, Spock told him that he could repair the emotional and mental damage if McCoy allowed him - Spock was disgusted and infuriated at the careless way his evil counterpart had flung the contents of the doctor's mind about as he searched for the information he needed: no wonder McCoy had been avoiding him.

6. Gentle
Kirk and Bones exchanged amused looks as Spock absent-mindedly continued stroking the fur of the feline in his arms.

7. One
"Either you let us all go, or all three of us stay."

8. Thousand
"Mr. Spock, I'm starting to suspect you of completely making up some of these odds you give me..."

9. King
Every king had a castle - Jim Kirk's just happened to fly.

10. Learn
NOMAD's mindwipe turned out, to everone's relief, to be temporary - Uhura awoke one morning in the medical bay, extremely confused and wanting to know why there were mathbooks and children's stories stacked beside her bed.

11. Blur
Kirk was something of an expert on blurring the line between "what my superiors have ordered" and "what I think is the right thing to do."

12. Wait
"Transporter room just beamed up five persons -" - the seconds feel like years, and then finally - "- alive and well!"

13. Change
The change is subtle, but there - they stand a bit closer together, hold eye contact a bit longer, smile at one another a bit more often -, and Bones wonders when the two of them are going to figure it out.

14. Command
"Don't you dare get yourself killed, Jim - I think Spock would sooner follow you than have to be in charge again, and I'd sooner follow you than listen to him."

15. Hold
They reboard the Enterprise soon after the vians depart with Gem - but not before Jim subjects Bones to a crushing bear hug.

16. Need
"I don't know why he needs the concrete, he just does - he bit my head off for asking, so it must be important."

17. Vision
McCoy decided that when he found either himself or Spock at death's door, he might consider telling the vulcan how terrible he'd felt after causing him to go temporarily blind.

18. Attention
"I don't care how unharmed you think you are; you need medical attention!"

19. Soul
Spock would argue for ten minutes with the doctor about exactly how human he was, and then prove himself wrong by looking at Jim.

20. Picture
Kirk smiled sadly when he spotted the object in McCoy's quarters - a stick figure drawing of a little girl and a man with a stethoscope, signed Joanna McCoy, age 5 and 1/2.

21. Fool
Kirk learned early on that one of the required assets of a starship captain was the ability to suffer fools gracefully - or at least without committing murder.

22. Mad
"You know, Scotty, the phrase "just crazy enough to work" gets tossed around a lot..."

23. Child
A lesser man would have retired to his quarters to mourn his brother and leave the child to be looked after by Bones or another doctor - James T. Kirk was many things, but he could never be referred to as a lesser man: he spent the next five hours with his nephew before McCoy finally ordered him to get some sleep.

24. Now
"Attack on the count of -"  - wow, that creature was fast -  " - nevermind; fire!"

25. Shadow
After a week of repairing the engines following an unexpected catastrophe, the shadows under Scotty's eyes were dark enough to make him look like he'd been in a fight - Kirk and McCoy both ordered him to sleep for the next two days.

26. Goodbye
Spock's departure for Starfleet was one of the few times Sarek did not begrudge him for showing emotion - he looked the other way as their son returned Amanda's embrace.

27. Hide
"Your Earth holidays make little sense, Captain - there is no logical reason for a rabbit to go about hiding eggs."

28. Fortune
The Enterprise survived that five-year mission running on a good captain, a brilliant engineer and a whole lot of luck.

29. Safe
Sometimes it seemed absurd, the fact that he felt the safest inside a hunk of metal hurtling through space - Kirk tried not to think about it too often.

30. Ghost
"If I die first, Spock, I'm coming back and haunting you."

31. Book
At times, he felt like he was stuck on a shelf between two bookends - he usually didn't mind.

32. Eye
Scotty sighed, dragging Chekov to his feet at the bottom of the stairwell and observing the bruising already forming around one eye - that was the last time he gave the Russian scotch...

33. Never
"If I never see another Swastika again, it'll be too damn soon."

34. Sing
Uhura didn't sing for weeks after coming back to herself following the NOMAD incident...

35. Sudden
...Then one day Scotty started whistling a tune she knew, and she found her voice again - the engineer grinned at her across the bridge.

36. Stop
"I know we've come across several - and I do mean several - similar situations, but - a planet exactly like the Earth except that they still put "stop" at the end of messages - really?"

37. Time
Five years wasn't nearly long enough, for anyone involved.

38. Wash
"Captain, two men have just appeared down here in the engine room, out of nowhere - one of 'em's asking for tea and the other's babbling about someone named Eddie and some sort of wash."

39. Torn
Breaking the rules of the game would undoubtedly result in severe punishment or at least imprisonment, but if he did not interfere it was likely the doctor would die - across the arena, McCoy fell, throwing his shield up in front of him, and Spock made his decision quite easily.

40. History
"Mr. Spock - we've had three World Wars, in thousands of years - how many vulcans killed one another before you came up with your blasted logic?"

41. Bother
"The ticking seems to be coming from an explosive device hidden somewhere in the pipework, Captain."

43. God
His hands were covered in green and red blood, Jim wasn't breathing and Spock wasn't moving, and Bones was sure he'd never said so many prayers before in his life.

44. Wall
"Disciplines my foot - they're called emotional walls, Spock, and we humans find them distinctly unhealthy."

45. Naked
He hadn't had this much trouble keeping his emotions in check since early childhood; Spock stumbled into the empty meeting room, thoughts racing, and tried to clear his mind - knowing the disease wouldn't let him.

46. Drive
"Captain, now he's talking about improbability and sofas - I think you'd better send Doctor McCoy down."

47. Harm
"I don't care how religious they are, Bones; actually proclaiming yourself Archangel Gabriel would not be a 'harmless joke.'"

48. Precious
"They're not really calling that 'unobtainium,' are they?"

49. Hunger
"Just once I'd like a meal that wasn't fooling every part of my brain to get me to like it."

50. Believe
"Of all the - Santa Claus was not invented in Russia!"

Writer's Block: Another sleepless night

"Occasional." Aha. You're funny.

Whenever I can't sleep, I put my headphones in and listen to something. Usually either my itunes or something to do with Channel Awesome/TSE. It's probably weird to fall asleep listening to an interview I've already heard at least once, but it works. :P

If it's a weekend and I can't sleep, I watch tv or write fanfic XD

Trekkie is tired...

0
0
I should be asleep right now. I can't even begin to tell you how much I should be asleep right now, instead of typing up a pointless livejournal post that no one's going to read.

But. Here we go anyway:

My views on the Star Trek TOS characters vs the Star Trek Reboot characters, because I rewatched the movie recently and have been on an Original Series binge for a while now:

1. Kirk.
I didn't dislike the Reboot!Kirk. But that's probably only because I couldn't even see him as Kirk. I understand why - the loss of his father would have dramatically changed his upbringing and personality development, of course. But it's still extremely jarring to go from a somewhat-reckless-but-only-when-people's-lives-are-depending-on-it, intelligent, chess-playing, mostly-responsible Captain Kirk to a steals-cars-from-admittedly-probably-deserving-assholes-and-drives-them-off-cliffs, hits-on-every-single-girl-he-sees, gets-in-barfights-partly-for-the-heck-of-it, sleeps-around-at-the-Academy Captain Kirk. Seriously.

2. Spock.
I did mostly like what they did with Spock in the movie. It was awesome to watch him beat the crap out of the other vulcan kids for dissing his mom, and I can totally see the whole "Yeah, fuck you, going to Starfleet kthxBAI" thing transpiring with TOS!Spock, but I thought he remained a bit too emotional as he got older.

And then there was that business with Uhura, but I'll get to that when it's her turn.

3. Bones.
The accent was generally convincing, if a bit exaggerated at certain points. Karl Urban did pretty well, and I liked that Bones and Jim still ended up being best friends. But it sort of felt like the writers didn't really know what they were doing with him. They turned him into a walking catchphrase machine. This makes me sad. ):

But I did like the bit where he and Jim first meet Spock.

Jim: Who is that pointy-eared bastard?
Bones: I don't know... But I like him!

When I first saw the movie, I'd just finished watching the Original Series, so I laughed my head off at that exchange.

4. Chekov.
TOS!Chekov - adorable and hilarious.
Reboot!Chekov - adorable and hilarious and close to my age. ;D

5. Sulu
I love Sulu in the original series, and I love him here. I'm not sure he would have made the mistake of "leaving the parking break on," as Pike put it, but I guess they all would have died if he hadn't, so... good job?

6. Chapel
HEY. She exists! What the hell, movie? Mentioning her name once does not count! >:(

7. Scotty
... :3 LOL. I love Scotty in the original. I love him here. But I don't know if I can see them as the same Scotty or not. It's weird. *shrug*

Also, Spock Prime - way to cause a paradox by giving him his own formula before he discovered it. Srsly.

7. Uhura
Ahem.
WHAT THE FUCK, MOVIE. WHAT. THE FUCK.
She seemed like she was going to be an interesting character, really live up to her TOS counterpart, and then BAM she's a token love interest. FFFFFFffffff-

When I watched the Original Series, I was extremely impressed by how large a role they gave Nichelle Nichols (a role she played brilliantly, by the way), and I was really excited to see what a new movie could do with the character without the restrictions of the 60s to worry about.

Now the controversial part:

I think the character was treated with more respect in the 60s. I'm not crying racist and/or saying the writers of the new movie were actively trying to disrespect her, but seriously:

TOS:
Uhura is the Communications Officer aboard the Enterprise. She goes on missions and sometimes gets to kick some ass. (Mirror, Mirror, anybody?) She is a loyal member of Kirk's crew and eventually ends up with Scotty.

Reboot:
Uhura is a student of xenolinguistics who later becomes the Communications Officer aboard the Enterprise. She's multilingual and good at what she does. But the important thing is that She Is Spock's Love Interest. She intercepts a message that helps prove Kirk's point, and that's about all she does for the majority of the movie. Except, of course, be Spock's love interest. Why does Spock need a love interest? My theories:

a. The writers were afraid of Ho Yay. (Tch, like girlfriends have ever stopped the internet.)
b. They wanted someone to go comfort Spock in the turbolift after the destruction of Vulcan/death of Amanda. Why the hell they didn't just have Sarek go talk to him is beyond me. Wouldn't he have benefited more from a talk with his mutually grieving father than a make-out session with his girlfriend at that point?

Uhura started out so promising in this movie, with a cool little view into what TOS!Uhura might have been like at the Academy, and then she got Demoted to Love Interest. *sigh* Oh well. She's still cool; it's just a shame we didn't get to see more of that.

Writer's Block: News development

I'm a young'un. The first big news I really remember is 9/11. I was probably in first grade at the time, and I didn't understand the situation at all. I just knew I was tired of hearing about it on tv.

Me: How long are they gonna talk about this?

Mother: Probably forever...

Me: ...Has it been forever yet?

Impatient little brat, wasn't I?

I set myself a writing challenge and filled it in about an hour. All three ficlets are set in the TOS universe, but I guess they can be read as STXI if you prefer it that way.

Challenge: Use the word “love” in relation to Kirk and McCoy, Kirk and Spock, and Spock and McCoy.

EDIT: Augh. Livejournal ate my formatting. Bold and italics have now been added. My apologies.

Nine days with no word, nine damn days, and when they finally beam him up he's grinning that cocky grin and stepping casually down off the transporter and McCoy can't decide if he wants to sob with relief or punch him.

Instead he steps forward and runs his tricorder over the already protesting captain.

“I'm fine, Bones.” And dammit, he sounds amused.

“I'll be the judge of that.”

“They didn't hurt me. Just kept me locked up.”

The tricorder backs up this story, and McCoy is back to his internal debate between tears and violence. He takes a third option, and grabs Jim into a tight hug. “You're an idiot,” he growls, and Jim laughs and returns the embrace.

“So I've been told.”

“A damn fool,” McCoy continues, loosening his hold slightly. He's not pulling away yet – not when he's spent the past nine days imagining every single thing that could have been happening to Jim down on that planet, not when he's been relentlessly tortured by the knowledge that he could do nothing to help, not when he can feel Jim's heart beating steadily against him. “You never bother to look before you leap.”

He can practically hear his captain smirking. “And that's why you love me.”

Bones laughs into his shoulder and finally steps away. “It's also why you're the only man on the ship who spends as much time in sickbay as I do. You do something like this again, I'm locking you in there, Jim.”

“I'll keep that in mind.”

They're lying in Jim's bed, not doing anything – a common enough set of circumstances. Jim is always pleased to find he doesn't mind this. He touches Spock's face, experiencing the usual burst of warm pride at the knowledge that he can, and silently makes his request.

Spock reaches out, fingers falling habitually into place. “My mind to your mind,” he murmurs, and Jim closes his eyes.

What do you wish, T'hy'la?

Even while largely unconscious of his physical being, he feels himself smiling at the word.

Show me something I haven't seen yet.

They are a small boy, wandering the house long after they should be in bed. They stop outside their parents' room as they hear voices.

“Sarek, tell me why you married me.”

They debate for a moment about going back to their room, but the subject interests them. They sit quietly down against the wall and listen.

“You were the logical choice for a mate.”

“I was not. I'm not a vulcan. Why did you marry me, Sarek?”

“It arose from a logic having nothing to do with biology, as you well know.”

“The logic of the heart, Sarek?”

“The heart is a part of the biological system, Amanda.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I fail to see why you constantly attempt to draw me into this conversation.”

“One of my emotional human needs, dear. Tell me why you married me without using the word 'logic.'”

The “I-love-you” is of the vaguely exasperated and detachedly amused variety, but there is sincerity in it.

They stand and go back to their room.

Jim opens his eyes and finds himself staring at his own ceiling. Rolling over, he meets Spock's gaze. He smiles tentatively, hesitant to jump to the conclusion he hopes he's supposed to have drawn. “Any reason you chose that particular memory?”

“Yes.”

Spock doesn't elaborate. He leans forward and softly presses their lips together. Jim finds Spock's hand under the sheets and touches his fingers in a gesture that is becoming second nature. He sends another request through the connection, and Spock gives silent permission. Jim shifts, resting his head on Spock's chest and allowing himself to fall asleep against the cool skin.

Spock never means any of the jabs he makes about McCoy's medical skills. They both know this. He has seen the man bring people back from the brink of death, and he has been one of those people more than once.

If he has one honest criticism, it is the lack of professional detachment. McCoy is the sort of human who “wears his heart on his sleeve,” as Spock has heard it said. Usually, when in the role of healer, he manages to get around this aspect of his personality. But when Spock has watched him work on the captain, and when he has woken to him at his own bedside, he has seen the sort of fear in his eyes that only comes from friendship and love.

When their positions are suddenly shifted, when they are deep underground with little hope of rescue, when McCoy is lying on a glorified table of a bed with everything wrong with him that possibly can be wrong and the vians simply don't care, Spock finally understands why the doctor has such trouble staying emotionally neutral in these situations.

*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING A NEW ACCOUNT*

(...Or, y'know, as important as these posts ever are.)

I've created a new account specifically for my fanfiction, mostly because the age I set on this account has been restricting me from participating in some communities.

The fandom account is heretherebefic. I suggest you friend me there if you want to keep track of any new fanfics I post. Most of them probably won't be put into both accounts, because formatting my stories for livejournal once is frustrating enough. :P
